WHERE SHOULD I STAY IN OBAN THE NIGHT BEFORE THE FERRY?
We would recommend staying at the new (Summer 2019) Premier Travel Inn in Oban
. It is right next to the ferry and has parking. For the more adventurous, we would recommend The George Hotel in Inveraray
. It is an hours drive from Oban but has fab rooms, good food, a live band on a Saturday night, and is a great way to start your holiday on Coll.
THE ISLE OF COLL
WHAT FACILITIES ARE THERE ON THE ISLAND FOR GUESTS?
The village (Arinagour) has a hotel which is open all year to non-residents round that does great food with great views. The Coll Hotel is open every day but worth booking in advance. We love the fresh crab claws and the cajun chicken burger.
There is also Island Cafe which is opening most days during the Summer months. It does great takeaway sandwiches too.
An Cridhe is the community centre which has lots of interesting events going on, including ceilidhs in the Summer, locally produced produce sales, coffee mornings, indoor hockey and has a gym. Useful for rainy days. Check out the website for what's on.
There is a cute Post Office shop that sells kids toys and souvenirs (and rents bikes), an artists gallery, a sailing club (visiting kids very welcome) and a studio selling Coll t-shirts and hoodies .
Outside of the village there is an RSPB nature reserve that often does guided walks and the occasional fresh produce stall outside locals houses.
WHAT IS THE BEST TIME OF YEAR TO VISIT?
We love the late autumn and early spring for huge rollers crashing on the stunning beaches and crystal clear days where you can see the Paps of Jura which are nearly 60 miles away. Early Summer gets some amazingly warm sunny days and the island is relatively quiet so you can enjoy the deserted beaches at their best, July and August is the busiest time with lots of activities to join in, including the Half Marathon, the Coll Show, ceilidhs and the sailing club. Early September is when the late Summer storms come in and the surfing and beach walks are just spectacular.
